After graduating with his M.F.A. degree, Lee taught fiction writing workshops at Emerson College for four years as an adjunct instructor, then began working full-time at the literary journal Ploughshares. He has also served as the primary editor of the literary journal Ploughshares for 17 years from 1988-2007. He was also an occasional writer-in-residence in Emerson’s M.F.A. program and a visiting writer at other colleges and universities.
Lee was formerly a faculty member of the Creative Writing department at Macalester College from 2007-2008. In the fall of 2008, Lee moved to the faculty of Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, where he taught both graduate and undergraduate courses as an associate professor in the graduate Creative Writing program. He is currently in the faculty of the Creative Writing program at Temple University, where he founded TINGE Magazine, an online literary journal run by graduate students. He served as the director of the M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts) program in Creative Writing at Temple University from 2011–2013.
